♣ Junk Sleep on the Rise ♣

You must be familiar with junk food, right? But what about junk sleep?

Junk sleep is a new term used to refer to a new lifestyle problem of children. According to Dr. Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Center in England, "it is sleep that is of neither the length nor quality that it should be in order to feed the brain with the rest it needs to perform properly at school."

Sleep experts are worried over the incidence of junk sleep. They compare the problem with the widespread junk food habits of teenagers these days. according to Sleep Council, "junk sleep" may now be at par with the consumption of unhealthy junk food as a major problem for teenagers.

The Sleep Council conducted a survey of 1,000 teenagers aged 12 to 16. About 30 percent of the respondents admitted to having 4 to 7 hours sleep. This is much less than the recommended 8 or 9 hours of sleep that translate a good night's rest.

Many teenagers said they fell asleep while watching TV or listening to music. nearly all of them had a TV, music system or phone in their room.
Forty percent of teenagers said they felt tired each day. But many did not realize that such tiredness could be caused by lack of sleep.

For sleep to be truly restful, doctors recommend at least 8 hours each night. The sleep must also be uninterrupted. Better still, doctors say that sleeping with lights off is best.
